Saito 30 fuel requirement
« on: May 06, 2015, 01:34:54 PM »
Can anyone tell me the anticipated fuel need when doing the pattern?  The plane is a Fancy Pants, 33 oz., 10/6 prop, and 2.5 oz. tank (non-uniflow, muffler pressure). Thanks

You forgot the bit about the fuel being PowerMaster 4-stroke 20/20 (I think I got that right).

More than you had that last flight, that's all I know.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

I don't have a saito, but my os26 and os30 four strokes use just a hair over 2 oz on power master ys/saito 20/20
Spot on Tim

I use the 3 ounce Hays tanks on Saito 30s

Both my Saito .30 and (2) Saito .40'S use about 2.5 Oz per pattern flight with some fuel left over.
I use 15% nitro with 20% synthetic oil ("Wildcat"). Powermaster 20% probably runs for a shorter
period of time due to the added nitro displacing the alcohol. You can even run the .30 on 10% nitro.

For sure, discard the Saito glow plug and use an OS "F" plug. You should try a 10-5 prop as well. I like
XOAR props for classic planes as they reduce the amount of lead you have to add to the tail on a plane designed
for 1 6.5 OZ Fox .35 with no muffler.

My four strokes don't recover from burps well if they aren't set too lean.

With the Fancy Pants, you have a bit of a problem, since four strokes should be mounted either
side-saddle or inverted to insure lubrication of the valve system.

The OS .25 FP is also good fit to the FP and likes to be mounted upright.

Rex

PS : You can mount an OS .25 FP in the Saito .30 mounting holes.

Just for fun I dug the plane out of storage and tried another full tank, static (non flying) run. I changed to an Evo 10-7 prop after reading some of the thread history here. 8,600 rpm, 4 clicks rich from the start of a lean sag, Saito/OS 20/20 Powermaster, 2.5 oz., muffler pressuer and non-uniflow, and it's out of fuel at 2minutes 45 seconds. The carb has been modified based on Bob Reeves article. I turned a new barrel  from Delrin, and used a 6-32 nylon choke screw. Valve lash is spot on.
2:45 just can't be right...  Too high of RPM (turn in the choke screw)?

Actually it can.. My 40's use 3 1/2 ounces and 30's use a full 3 ounces for the pattern. I haven't ran the 30 as much as the 40 but I can tell you if the 40 isn't burning at least 3 1/2 ounces of 20-20 it isn't running where it's most happy.

You may have been a little rich and I have since discovered EVO props do not work as well as I first thought. Your RPM setting sounds about right (maybe a little high, probably making up for the inefficient prop) but I would ditch that prop. Wished I could recommend a good available prop for the 30. Seems like every time I find one that is currently manufactured it gets discontinued. Might check to see what is available in a Thunder Tiger 10 - 6 or 9.x-6.x from Tower. The Thunder Tiger 11.3 X 6.5 I run on my 40's is now really hard to find or I would suggest cutting one down to try on the 30..

Thanks Bob, I'll keep looking at props.
