Veco .29 Parts
« on: March 13, 2017, 09:52:48 PM »
I just acquired a pretty decent looking Veco .29 that is missing the drive washer, prop washer, nut and needle valve. The only thing that concerns me is the drive washer. it looks like it would be a narrow little booger with a tapered hole. I haven' had the time to check my parts stash yet but thought I would check in here to see what else might fit. Are the .35 washers the same ? If anyone has a decent used one or new, give me a shout. I can handle the prop washer, nut and needle valve most likely. Just want to make a complete runner out of it, and maybe use it on a Goldberg Buster for nostalgia sake.
  Thanks a lot in advance,

Which side is the exhaust on? If it's on the "wrong" side, like a GH Torp, it's an early Veco, and was made by K&B. K&B parts fit, and I'd bet that .29 & .35 parts would fit for the ones you're missing. IF it is indeed the early Veco .29, the conrod may be cast aluminum, and it's use is at risk of breaking and destroying the P&L. Like mine did.

I was told that K&B changed to steel rods (OMG!) for their own engines, but used up the stock of cast aluminum rods in the Veco's. No idea why they wouldn't have use some sort of aluminum barstock, but probably just cheaper to make, back in the days before CNC's.   y1 Steve

The exhaust is on the right side of the engine. And the crank shaft has a short taper. It may be the first generation after the green heads. I still need to look through my parts box, or see if one from a .35 (I think I have a couple of those) will fit. I searched evilBay and haven't turned anything up yet.

I got to fiddle with the engine last night. The back plate and gasket were on wrong, so pulled it off to check the rod. Looks like the rod is machined aluminum. Insides were clean as a whistle, I don't think this engine has ever been run. Tried a drive washer off a Veco .19 and it fit well enough to put a prop on it, oil it up a bit, and give it the flipity test to see how it sounded. I think it will be a good little sport engine for a Goldberg profile, or one of the other older orphan airplanes I have hanging in the garage. Just gotta keep looking for another drive washer.
