Uncommon tongue mufflers for sale, or custom made?
« on: February 15, 2017, 05:40:41 PM »
Where is the best place to get a tongue muffler for an uncommon engine?
Specifically looking for one that can be made to fit a Thunder Tiger .15.
The exhaust port is large-ish for a .15, and the muffler bolts are actually inside the port.
I'll try to post pictures later.

I assume someone makes these custom if none is available?

I had thought that this engine was a knock off of a Enya III .15, (and still do, since the venturi fits perfectly) but according to Mr. shtterman, the tongue muffler he has for the Enya he didn't think would work.
In his defense, he had only dimensions, and no pictures. It seems pretty normal to me.
I've since sent him the pics, we'll see.

Thoughts? I'd like to have a lighter option than the stock muffler, and a quieter option than running open. The stock muffler weighs a bit at 33g for a 4.05oz engine without it.

Thanks!

Talk to Scott Riese.  He is listed in the members section - a good engine guy.

Thanks, Russell, I would have overlooked him, not knowing him.

Your TT15 is old and rare, so no one know about the muffler.
Can you  measure the exhaust size and the bolt pitch?

Don't overlook asking Eric Rule and Randy Smith. There are surprising coincidences in model engines, most likely with engines using the French system of measurement.  y1 Steve

Greetings, Aki-

Holes center to center is 1.100" or (28mm), thread diameter in stock muffler 2.5mm.
Exhaust port inner height is .245" (6.25mm)
Exhaust port inner length is 1.240" (31.5mm)
Exhaust port outer height is .360"  (9mm)
Exhaust port outer length is 1.370" (35mm)

Stock muffler port- @ 24mm x 6.25mm

Chris, another possible option is just reducing the weight of the original muffler. I just went through it on an OS 703, a strap on for the old OS-S 35. The result was a 25% weight reduction.

Here's the original at 60 grams:

Here's it after removing cooling fins, fittings, smoothing bosses, filling holes and adhering the front and rear sections together with JB Weld:

Here's the comparison. You can see the modified version is slightly shorter. Looking to reduce weight as much as possible, I ground off some of the rear flange on the front section and part of the forward flange on the rear section, leaving just a small mating section to ensure the 2 sections mated up correctly:

Best Regards,
Bill

Thanks to all.
I actually found a tongue muffler that fit, care of Mr. Enya, aka Shtterman from EBay.
He's also set me up with a Delrin venturi for the same little Thunder Tiger .15 v-rc.
Now I just need to build a plane for it!
