Os Max 46 AX and AXII for stunt?  Is this viable?

This might relate...

A friend has an OS 55 AX that had been modified for stunt.  It turns a 12x6 at 10,000 in four stroke mode, so I am told, haven't seen it myself.

I still haven't figured out what CLPA model he can possibly use it on n~

I think it would take some work to get it right, and when you were done it'd be a heavy beast.  If you value your time to any degree at all, get a Stalker or a PA or some other stunt-specific motor.  Not only will you get something that's known to work, but there will be plenty of folks who will know how to help you with problems.  If you start playing with the AX, nine out of ten answers to any question will start with "switch to XXX brand engine".

Having said that -- if you want to go for it just for the sake of experimentation, go for it!  I'd start with a typical "stunt-sized" venturi, and don't be surprised if it's "happy speed" is in excess of 10,000 RPM (don't be surprised if it's lower -- I do not know what's best with that engine).

This topic has come up before.  If you're not prone to frustration with computers, try searching for it (it's hard no effectively narrow down the search terms, so plan on wading through some dross).  I honestly can't remember if anyone has come out and said that they use it.

At this point I'm not thinking of doing it.  However, I see them on the "bay", new, and sort of figured that it's not a worthy successor to the LA 46 or it would have constant mention here.  However, the thought is intriguing to me.  It does look like a hunk of metal and one that needs a venturi and needle valve.

I found some posts as far back 2012 in which Randy Cuberly got the 55AX to run quite well.

Heli engines generally use a ringed piston and often have an oiling groove to the front bearing. Both are annoyances to most stunt fliers. Not that they can't be made to work, but would you rather fly or fuss with an oddball engine with very little database for our use? Folks do such things for the challenge, but you gotta ask yourself if it's worth it to you. If you go for it, expect to use props around 13-4 or 12-4 3 blade, and quite possibly adjust pitch to lower than 4".  D>K Steve

Many of my planes have R/C engines that have been converted to "stunt use" with proper venturi and needle valve assemblies. All are equipped with tongue mufflers and I operate them all  with clunk tanks and muffler pressure. You have to find the props that they like in concert with your plane. The only drawback I see is weight of some of the R/C mills. I'd experiment with that 46AX. It's got to be a powerhouse!....PhillySkip

Here are mine. Both are 55AX's. I also have a third in RC form in reserve. Can't load the video of them running because of file size limitations.

Allen,
No planes yet, as they are all brand new. Not much to say, they crank up and run. If you follow the RC pattern sites, you will be quite familiar with the 55AX. Can pull a Curare going vertical, straight out of site.

People seem to forget that, a lot of our great Stunt motors were dedicated RC purpose engines. The ST 46, ST 60, LA 40, 46, OS Max VF's, and the Saitos are all RC motors. We wrote a lot of stunt history with those engines.
