OS .15 FP Repairs
« on: April 01, 2017, 10:14:03 PM »
So, I recently came into possession of this little gem yesterday. She needed a little TLC, and I have already begun to give it the attention it needed. As my post in the classifieds looking for a prop washer, it is for this little thing. Anyways, it is a low time engine I was told. I had drilled a 1/16" hole at the front of the crack pictured, ground out and veed out the crack some. I then cleaned with thinners and allowed to dry, followed by the application of JB Weld. I am thinking of wiring this thing open and putting it on either an Akromaster or Ringmaster Jr.? I have also been advised to make a rear mount that utilizes the rear crankcase cover and screws to attach it with. So for your viewing pleasure, here it is. Any comments, help, or suggestions are welcome. Thank you.

Chancey, did the person you got it from say how the crack got there? Are you sure the crank shaft isn't bent cause it migaht have been nose dived on to a hard surface to get a crack like that. The j b weld should be a good fix but like M.M. says runit before installing in a plane. It would be great in your choice of planes. Needle valves and venturi's are available from Tower Hobbies for the .15

Nope, sorry, I did not ask about how the damage got there. I would assume that it was not from a bad landing on a soft runway as the engine is very clean. But, that does not mean that it was cleaned up though.

It might have been bolted down hard to a bad mount.

Well, I had never thought of that. It would seem very plausible as well. The damage is all at the beam mounts, and the damage involved could very well be seen in that way. I also forgot to add that I am also in process of fixing the other side beam as well. It is just missing the front part in front of the front mounting hole. I have a sheet steel 'jig' made and clamped to the mounting ear and filled the area with JB Weld. After it is dry, I will remove the jig and finish the area up. I did also rough up the area before installing the JB Weld.

I would bolt it down tight to a 1/8" aluminum pad and then bolt the pad to the plane. Use large washers or aluminum pads on top of the mounts to keeps the bolt loads even.

Piston engines have been through the roof since most went off the market.
