O&R needle valve problem
« on: May 05, 2017, 04:12:37 PM »
Who would have thought a needle valve could be a problem. I have an O&R 23 FR engine and needed to add an extension to it. The knurled part is aluminum with a steel needle, ok so good so I soldered and extension onto the needle stub sticking out the end. Well it seems the needle is not fixed to the aluminum part so when I turn to adjust it just spins inside the aluminum part. Bet Floyd has the answer to this one. Thinking of using JB Weld. Richard

I had the same problem the first time we tried to fly my Monogram Aeronca about 15 years ago.  Dick Wolsey and I spent an exhausting 1/2 hour trying to start the O&R .23.  We finally realized the needle was loose in the housing.  Since we were at VSC, Dick walked over to a vendor's tent and bought a replacement.  Then the motor started and kept running and we had a successful first flight.

All of the stock O&R needle valves have very coarse threads, making it difficult to adjust.  Find a modern assembly for it.  Look at OS, ST, and others.  You can fix the stock needle with JB Weld.  Solder a brass tube to the end of the steel needle, and then pot the end of it to secure the aluminum part to the steel needle.

Thanks Floyd! Last night I did just that with JB Weld. I guess I should purchase a new needle valve. Richard

I assumed it was an O&R.  Has anyone made an aftermarket replacement for the O&R needle valves?

Woody Bartelt at woody's engines makes most of the parts for most all old spark engines. Timers, gas tanks, needle valves and other stuff.

Good discussion here, and a couple of questions for Floyd or others.

I have an unmodified .60 that I plan to put back into the air some day while still keeping it in original condition. Would like to install (temporarily) and better NVA, so can look into OS or ST. Has anyone here tried this modification? I know about OS, but what does ST stand for, Floyd?

Finally, I'm curious about Floyd's great avatar. Fiddle or violin?

Thanks!

Fiddle?  Violin?  The only difference is how it's played.  I spent over 40 years in various symphony orchestras behind my violin (fiddle?).  Sort of retired now due to occasional hand cramps if I play too long at one time.

I have a .60 sideport using an Enya NVA, O&R needles suck as far as adjustability. A question though, Perfect products sold needle valves back in the day, wonder for what engines.

Right on, Floyd, and keep up the good work!

Thanks, Brett for the elucidation. And Doug, it's nice to know that Enya is also another option. Somebody mentioned Wood Bartelt above, so options galore!
