K&B Torpedo Head Paint Color
« on: August 02, 2016, 02:56:57 AM »
I just scored a left hand exhaust K&B .35 Torpedo engine. What paint and color should I use, that closely matches the original head color?

Take the head off and bring it to a paint shop- they can match it with their machine.

Not in this case. Head paint was stripped off, it is a used engine.

Hi George,

Duplicolor has a green paint in their engine paint spray cans that works great.  It seems K&B might have used a couple dfferent shades but when I used it the paint matched a brand new GH .19 I have.

Bill, both you and Fred Von have helped point the right direction. I gather that the paint to use is probably Duplicolor Hunter Green engine paint. I watched Chellie Ramos' videos of these newly overhauled engines running, they appear to of that color. I left a comment on one video asking what paint and color she used, will see how she replies. I plan to mount it on one of my profiles, may be the late 1950's Berkeley Interceptor. Folks on the Ringmaster Brotherhood previously commented on how to mount left hand exhaust engines, I will place on the left side of the fuse so exhaust is pointing downward.

There were early K&B Torpedos glows that apparently did not have a green head. Maybe you have one of those? I think they were just after becoming glow engines, i.e., not spark ignition.

I had an early Veco .29 that had the exhaust on the "wrong" side...the early ones were made by K&B, and were essentially "Greenies" except...they had an aluminum fin setup (like some Mercos) that the cylinder dropped into...and the con-rod was cast aluminum. I was told that the early K&B's got steel rods, while the Veco's were still sold with the cast aluminum rods, which broke. Mine broke, so I wasn't happy. If your K&B has the cast aluminum rod, find a steel rod for it, or maybe make one from 2024-T4.   H^^ Steve

Steve, whether this is an early Torpedo or not, that I can't say. I didn't know that the earliest ones were unpainted. K&B had a 3 bolt back similar to the Foxes on their earlier engines. This one has 4 bolts.

Matt, I saw that listing on E-Bay, too, appears to be more of an aqua green. I contacted Shellie Ramos, engine overhaul guru. She told me that she uses VHT Kermit Green Engine Enamel on her overhauls. It is a slightly lighter color than Hunter Green. VHT in that color is not available in my area (small rural town). I'm thinking that Kermit Green may be a close Match to Duplicolor Grabber Green (Lime, SKU# DE1641, color chip from Duplicolor web site shown).
