Glow Plug Head for Gilbert .11 Thunderhead Engine
« on: April 04, 2017, 08:02:43 PM »
I've got several Gilbert .11 Thunderheads. Is there a universal glow plug head that will work on it, besides the 1950's Fox .10 one? (Did the .10 come only with glow head, not glow plug head? I figure it must be as rare as hen's teeth.) Will a Mecoa Cox .15 Medallion glow plug head adapter work on it?

George,

If I remember correctly the Fox 09 and 10 had the same thread. That said I have a lot of 09 plugs. I could send you one for inspection.

I've run into the same issue with my Gilbert 0.07 and 0.11 Engines: dwindling supply of strong glow heads.  I drilled out the old glow element of both and tapped for std glow plugs.  Have to be careful as the aluminum glow heads are soft, and the threads are easily stripped. You have to play around with short vs extra-short plugs and one vs two copper gaskets to get the right compression, or extension of the plug into the combustion chamber.  But, it does work well, and allows you to use off-the-shelf plugs for what I consider to be pretty neat engines.  I'll try to get around posting on YouTube a little movie of my 0.11 conversion . . .  C R
