HP Gold Cup .61 RC as a stnt engine?
« on: June 03, 2017, 07:13:48 AM »
       Hello All:

I stumbled across on these NIB and I was wondering if anybody ever used one as a Stunt engine.  If they are similar to the .40, they should make a great Stunt engine.  The only dark side would be replacement parts availability.

Anybody ever use on of these as a Stunt engine?

      Comments, remarks?

                                                                                                                            Tia,

                                                                                                                             Frank McCune

Somebody built a Sweeper once , with a OS 60 FSR in it .

For those of us over 6 ft 13 , 20 stone , and having 80 ft lines , it might be a good idea , if its not to windy .

Heres a bloke who tried one in a Float Plane .  :##

These guys were out when I was flying the 2 Kilo Mewgull with the Merco 49 in it , one on my side of the Harbour .
In the clear air above the pines , it took a few goes before your mind didnd connect to theirs , in the O'Head Eights .

Just about started another one , last week . dunno if the Stalker will match the Merco in the Wind . It was no Bother .
As long as you hung on securely .

Hello Frank
I used a HP61 R in a large built up model (790 sq inch) and 72 oz back in 1991. The motor went very well plenty of power and did not run away giving a nice a steady 2/4 stroke run. I did have problems with the tank height being rear induction and swapped to a 90 four stroke but the HP61 was a lot lighter and gave a easier to manage run. The model is still sitting in the workshop waiting for me to bolt in a HP61 front rotor I brought.

Regards Gerald

just for GP's, I checked the MECOA site and they have just about everything for spare parts for the motor as well.

Just thought Id better say , was a degree of thongue in cheek there . But a 2 kilo aeroplane ( 71 Oz. 0 in a 20 kt wind does require some restraint .

Gerald , See you dont mention ' retiming ' .

My rear Induction 40 retimed to 130 - 110  Ex Trans , is brilliant particularly in calm & gale conditions .

So think the rear inductions worth persueing . I had 1/4 turn on the needle - cowl on - cowl off . For same rpm's .
New ship with a 80 is rear induction ( the a ST 60 will transplant if reqd. )

Using a simple wire spring catch , center of cowl . So I can start / Choke the thing. Start up THEN throw it ( the cowl ) on .

Will save ' a thousand words ' with picture . The TOP COWL is the REMOVEABLE one . ! Engine goes in from TOP . !

Had considered magnets , but as Ive a piece of wire , and posses No Magnets , this saved hunting some .

Actually the usual ' wetting ' & Nose Down - to prime fuel line , worked o.k. , but no access if you blew it .

p.s. The webra looks pretty much like the HP , the rear ex. offering cleaner lines, etc . Dunno timing or retiming on them tho. havnt handled one .

Hello
The HP 61R I used was a Gold Cup with stock timing, it went well with a 13x6 as the timing is not that radical (was a rated at only 1.3hp at 15000 with muffler when tested back in 1977 see Scepter flight for tests) To choke it for starting I designed the model to have the firewall further back so I had access to the venturi but this left me with a short deep tank creating more  tank height problems.
I also used a stock HP40 R Silver Line and found it a nice engine on a heavy profile stunter back in the early 80's so felt the 61 should be similar just bigger.

Yes thanks to Windy's Sweeper  I had to try some big models with 60 size schuerle ported engines and found my favorite is the Fox Hawk 60 as it is light and powerful but can get hot with its steel fins.
The early 4 bolt Head HP 61 was used by another stunt flyer here in New Zealand (Chris Allen) but that was long ago now (30+ years) and I cannot remember details.
bye Gerald
