Bladder diameter for 3/16" latex
« on: January 02, 2017, 10:25:04 PM »
So, I'm thinking of fitting a bladder into a vintage Jr. Satan. I'd like to fit it into the wing without a bulge.
I know that my 3/8" OD latex tubing expands to 1.75" OD when filled.
Specifically, my 3/8" tubing is LT-38 from Terminal Tackle.

Will 3/16" OD latex (1/8" ID) expand to half of that? The wing is less than 1 1/4" at the widest point. I'm hoping to find some latex that will fill to less than 1" diameter.

I'm hoping not to have to spend $15 just to buy/measure - hoping some of you have already used the small stuff for 1/2A.

Thanks!
And Happy New Year!

Keith,
PM me your address and I'll send you a length of some small surgical tube I use on my TeeDees, Norvels and MPJets that might fit. I'm not sure of its dimensions, but if it does work for you, I buy it from TexasTimers.com with my other small bladder fittings. About $1 buck a foot.

You need to just make up a bladder and test it.

One thing for sure - don't make the compartment too small.  If the bladder is not allowed to expand to full size it will create "FALSE PRESSURE" at the beginning of the run, then go lean as the pressure is relieved.

I would be very surprised if you are able to get a bladder within the airfoil of a Junior Satan.

So on my 1/2a speed stuff (like my torky with a CS) I run 1/8 ID bladder from MBS. I use a philly cigar tube which is approximately 0.75-0.80 ID. I can measure it tonight if you want the exact number, but we're probably using a different brand.

I have .0625 ID, .145 OD that blows up to .600, less than 5/8.

Edited so I'm not providing misinformation, as is my norm.....

Oh! And I modified a wing on a junior Satan with a cox .09 for my friend very recently. We're switching it to a .15, but more because of balance than anything. It's not pretty, but it fits with no bulge using my proto speed bladder set.

hey Keith.
I had the same issue when I built my Jr. Satan last year. I finally gave up and made a tin uniflow tank. I had a bet that it would run 75 mpg on .018 60 ft lines.........The Tee Dee was a screaming, the bet was on for 4 cans of Dinty Moore Beef stew.........They let it go, it turned left at an incredible rate......"here she comes!"
come to find out the lines were .021! Not nearly enough wingtip weight for that screw up.

Ok, I have .250 OD that blows up to 1.375 ( 1 3/8 )

So I thought I had 3/16 but I can't find the purple stuff. I'll keep digging, hopefully this helps a little

I'd still up that bet to a used Walmart gift card if you'd try again

PM Sent, sir. But I'm not sure it went anywhere. My "outbox" is empty... Let me know if you don't see it soon.

So, does the .145 OD stuff come from MBS? That sounds perfect. Like maybe 1 oz will fill a 2" long sausage.

I got it, and I replied. What I'm sending you should work. It fits fine in my thin 1/2A Gladiator wing, no bulge, no squeeze. Check your inbox.

Rusty

Hi Rusty -
The tubing arrived today and I think it'll work perfectly. It inflates to 0.95".
1.5 oz would make it about 3.2" long which works. This will fit into my Jr. Satan just fine.
Thanks for sending it! I made an order of my own and will return some new stuff for ya!

For anyone who might be interested, I've gathered a small sampling of various latex bladder tubes, filled 'em with fuel, measured before, after, lengths, dimensions and all that stuff.
Rather than trying to read a 2 oz syringe for accurate volume, I used a CAD tool to create a 3D model of each one. The program spits out the overall volume.

The results are attached here.
The "In/Oz" figure may be useful when trying to fit a particular bladder into a particular wing; in my case a Jr. Satan. I can get in an ounce with a 3" bladder using 3/32" ID tubing from MBS. Or I can use teh LT-316 (Thanks Rusty!) and the bladder would be much shorter, but also barely fits within the wing.

I also learned that, for some of the real small stuff, the hot-dog gets really long when trying to cram in even a .25 oz of fuel!
