The Falcon '35' was indeed designed by Duke Fox,  he said as a vehicle to test his engines on.  It was kitted by Berkley Models (later owned by Fox).  You can Google it and get some info including a source in the UK for plans.  I had one as a kid.  The '49' I think was a remake by someone else a little later but don't remember much about it,  though I think it was published.

I have the plans for the Falcon .35 in the shop somewhere.   I built it and flew it.   Flew better than I could.  It was built from the plans, not a kit.

I believe the WS of the Falcon 35 was 49". (??)  That might be causing the confusion on the name.  I do remember when Berkeley and Fox sold the kit.  I believe I have an article where Tom Dixon (or similar) built one as an engine test bed and then published it.  No flaps and open cockpit, IIRC.

Maybe you got our plans John !  Dad bought the kit from the hobby shop but the plans were missing.  He built it mostly by looking at the picture on the box.  I think the shop
was either Kinkaids or Papenfus & Sons.  They seemed to have hundreds of kits in those days.  Also got some stuff from Pop Schreiber (Model Aircraft Institute)

Maybe,  they were in a box of stuff I had and can't remember where it came from.  There were other plans including the other half of a set of plans for Fox's big glider.   So they may have been part of the Meriwether estate.

The "Falcon 49" was published in the September 1993 Model Aviation by Fred Brigeman.  It was an update to the "Falcon 35" designed by Duke Fox and kitted by Berkeley -- I think after Fox bought Berkeley.  The article is available from the Model Aviation web site.  Plans have also been offered on eBay.

Just scored a set of original kit plans on da bay and thought about this thread.  Someone also is selling the '49' plans there.  What I was surprised to see was the lack of flaps and that the kit had a dorsal fin from canopy to rudder with a different shape rudder than mine had.  Dad put flaps on ours,  probably copying the Noblers and Skylarks that populated our area at the time.  Maybe why that airplane seemed to float out on the lines.  Been thinking about an airplane with box fuse and upright engine in the open like this to test a skad of classic .29-.35 engines in my collection.  This will fit the bill and go into my personal museum though this one I'll build as kitted.

If just want a test bed, get a copy of Tom Niebuhr's 'Hobo'.

Well John I'd been thinking of something dual-use like an old timer.  In this case the Falcon isn't,  it's classic and not really a good choice for that without the flaps but at least it will have nostalgic value for me.  I want to add it to my little fleet of blasts from my past.

Dave,
At Sig we had a file cabinet full of stuff from Berkeley (Sig bought Berekely from Fox). When looking for an old time project (or a future kit) I found the folder for the Falcon 35.  There was nothing in that folder that said when it was produced and/or released.  In this folder were plans, purchase orders for hardware parts, and a production sheets.  Production sheets were used to setup the parts in the proper order when packing the kits into the kit box.

The production sheets were dated 10-5-52.  That in itself does not prove or disprove when it was released, or put into production, only that it was considered and was in the works.  There was nothing on who (or whom) designed the Falcon 35 model.  Most of all the Berekelu kit folders has that and more information.  If anyone knows the kit release release date of the Falcon 35 please let me know.

Later,
Mikey

Mike I found the plans in the stack and will get a copy tomorrow.  The plans say Duke Fox designed it ( I think I remember him telling me that- to test run Fox .35s on).  The copyright on the plans is 1960.  It would be great if you could convince 'whoever' to accept it as old time but the kit plans won't help.  This looks to be in the lost decade between the old time cutoff date and the Nobler.  Bunch of neat airplanes in that dead zone.  Another class???

I have an undated copy of a magazine add.  The add shows that the kit must have come out the same time as the first Magician,  if anyone knows when that was.

I had the Falcon 35 and flew it at VSC and Topeka.   Topeka was its demise as I didn't pullout of a reverse wingover soon enough.  The fence stopped the nose of at the Gage Park site.  It is not Old Time eligible.

Hi Doc,
That is what I'm trying to find out.  To my way of thinking it is, but haven't found the proff yet other than the production sheets.

Dave,
What is the date of that add?  That my shed a little light on this.

Mike I don't know.  It's a photo copy of the add someone sent me.  I hoped someone knew more about the Magician and that would answer our question.  I really don't think the Magician came until well after the Nobler.  Anyway the plans have been mailed....finally.

Hi Dave,
The plans arrived, I just want to say "Thank You" for taking the time to do this.

Hi Doc,
As it stands right now I have to agree, the Falcon 35 is classic legal and not Old Time legal.  However there is much more to learn about this model.

Thanks Guy's,
Mikey

You'll likely get one built long before I do.  Please post photos and tell me how she flies.

Dave

I found another nostalgia pet project as well.  I found a Fox Stunt Runt kit and a Fox .07 for it.  Had one as a kid.  I remember it flew better than I could.  Of course it had too short a life.

Well I have not been in the shop as I have been cleaning my corner of the bed room per the boss.  I found a Christmas card from one of the great ladies in Tuscon with a picture of the Falcon 35 I built from the plans.  Thanks goes to Ricki Pyatt for the pic.    H^^

Can't remember the weight, but power was an OS .35.

Hi Doc,
Now the big question, how did it fly?  It appears it had plenty of power with FP 35 so that wasn't the issue.  It also has a fairly light paint job with the clear silk-span.  Oh, did I say nice job?

Later, Mikey.

It flew great for me, but what do I know.   In the right hands I think it would be a contender.   Thanks for the compliment and that is not silk span.  If my memory is right, that is super cover right. H^^
