Looking at engines for an Ares 59.
The original ran the Fox .35 I think.
Considering an Enya 30SS.  It weighs about one oz more than the Fox and produces .75 HP compared to the Fox at .35.

Thoughts on this engine for the Ares?

I understand the lighter the better.

I wouldn't hesitate to use it, it's a great engine.  It's not really going to be ideal if you want the full classic 4/2 experience, but run in a wet 2 with something like a 10.5x4.5, it's excellent.

Well I do have several Fox .35 Stunt engines.  Was just looking for something else for this.

Keep the Ares under 40 oz.  The Enya should be fine running in a wet 2.  For a real nostalgic experience put in a good running Fox .35.  But using more power never hurts!  My son had a lot of success running a well worn OS .32F, and later the compact Magnum .36XLS.  I will probably use the Aero Tiger .36 in my next Ares.

Actually this is an Enya SS.30 BB engine.  
So my choices are that Enya SS.30 BB, an OS .40 Stunt, Enya SS.40 S or the Enya SS.40 BB S or new J&B .40.
I an told to keep it light.  All the Enya engines range from about 8 to 10 ounces without mufflers.  The Fox .35 is about 7 oz.
So any of the engines should be light enough.
51 inch wing and about 550 squares.
Which engine do you all recommend out of my choices above?
All the engines except the K&B need prop extensions to fit properly on the Ares.

Actually I just laid the K&B .40 up against the plans and it fits perfectly without an extension.  That sort of fixes my problem?

those are really heavy engines for an ARES, use the FOX  35 over the 10 ounce motors, also  check is your 30BB  really a 35?  I have not seen a 30 that was ball bearing

Somethings I have learned about Ares over the years (built my first one in 1964) is that they have to be built light (39oz. oe less) to fly best and they need to fly at about 5.1 laps on 60' eye to eye .015 unless you have a real abundance of power.  I spent a lot of time talking to Mr. Werwage about the different Classic models of his.  Not everyone knows that Billy did a lot of work on the Fox .35 and also tipped the nitro jug very generously. 

Your 60th Anniv. Fox .35 will fly yours well and you will really enjoy it as long as you don't let the weight climb.  A heavy Ares just doesn't fly like it should.

Thanks for the info.  Chuck said Mr. Werwage went with 25% nitro with that Fox .35.  That can be done.  I will really work on hollowing out the balsa blocks that come in that kit to keep it light.  Going with silkspan on the wing and fuselage but keeping the finish coats to a minimum.
Sending to Randy for engine tweaks.  He ran out of stuffer plates but I found one here I will send with the engine.

Thanks for the photo, looks like they used a 25BB frontend, I had many 30s and 35 in my shop, that is the first one (30) I had seen, although I did have the 25BBs in stock, Those had the aluminum piston also, does your 30 have a steel or aluminum piston? can you tell

It appears from this literature that it is a cast iron cylinder.  The Enya guys always talk about long break in procedures and very long engine life if the break in is properly executed.  Usually an hour of break in time.  See link...

Also, I contacted Bob Brooks, the US Enya distributor and he verified that it is cast iron.

I'm flying a 59 Ares at 48 oz with an La 40 ,63 ft lines, 10.5x4.5 prop and seems to be flying just fine.

BINGO  !!!   Older  OS 35 S   is  a great choice

although a good FOX 35 or  Merco 35 will pull it very easy

been a while, but Randy built a Fox 35 for me.  I have the Brodak Ares 59 kit and the Fox will power it.

Building a profile Cardinal first to get my hand back into building.
