Nostalgia Carrier list?
« on: January 19, 2017, 07:34:47 PM »
Is there an official list of accepted design for Nostalgia Carrier.

I guess a could dig through old magazines, but it would be easier if the work was already in hand.

The attached list was compiled by Dick Perry. It is mostly complete for designs that were either kitted or published as plans. There are certainly eligible designs from individuals that were not published. These are not all widely known and are not on the list. As far as being "Official", Dick did this as a helpful resource. It is incumbent upon the contestant to have verification that his model qualifies for the Nostalgia bonus.

Thank you.  That's the list I had in mind.

Scale is scale so you don't really need the actual plans.

As I see it, if you scale your model to the wingspan on the list, you're OK.

I'm not much of a carrier flyer but have some antique kits. What are the rules (where are they) for this event?
Forgive my ignorance

The primary rules package is on the NCS website: http://www.navycarriersociety.org/MainMenu.aspx . Click on the <RULES> radio button.

The 1974 - 1975 AMA Official Model Aircraft Regulations are used for the actual competition, including airplane specifications, scoring, etc.

I'm just looking for a basic US Navy airplane.

Skyraider, Hellcat, Wildcat, Guardian, Mauler, etc.  With a wingspan close to the 44" limit.

It has to be kitted or published before Jan 1, 1978.  But it can be scale, or even RC.

I already have (my second) 30" Mottin Skyraider.  It's a little on the small side, but it's served me well.

Thanks Bob.
I have a Grumman Guardian and a Mac 60...... Rossi 60 so can build the oldie that might dislocate a shoulder. Might have to go with the 40. I'm surprised that no bonus points for "period engines" in the nostalgic rules.

There is a bonus for period engines, it just isn't exactly spelled out that way:

6. Non-Schnuerle Engine Bonus:
6.1.1. Non-Schnuerle engines will receive a bonus of 20 points.

Tom Wilk at  Tawilk36@cpinternet.com  has or had a CD with all the carrier plans, 64 of them in total. All classes plus a bunch of 3 views of navy planes.

Thank you for the help.  I now have plenty of plans in hand.
I just need for winter to hang in long enough to get something built.
I'm still in the 2016 patching-up phase now.  I try to belay all new work until the repairs are in hand.

Agreed.  Keep in mind that there is a 100 point Historical Model Bonus available if one builds to nostalgia plans.  Very few modifications are allowed:
"5. Historic Model Bonus:
5.1.A bonus of 100 points will be awarded for models which were designed, published, or kitted
prior to January 1, 1978. The Contest Director may require proof of eligibility, which shall be
the responsibility of the contestant. Proof may consist of dated, published plans, construction
article, photograph or advertisement from dated magazines, dated photographs, and/or letter
of confirmation of the date of design.
Plans of un-kitted, un-published designs must be made available to NCS membership.
To qualify for this bonus, models must comply with the following requirements:
5.2.Modifications:
5.2.1. No modifications to the original design are permitted, except as listed below. Any
modifications other that listed in section 5.3 which, in the opinion of the event director,
significantly change the appearance or performance of the model as it was originally
designed, shall not be permitted. This prohibition includes, but is not limited to, changes
in airfoil, changes in dimensions and use of moveable control surfaces not included on the
original design.
5.3.Allowable Modifications:
5.3.1. Landing gear may be changed in length or material, but must exit the model at the
original position.
A tail wheel may be substituted for a skid and vice versa.
Wheels may be of any diameter.
5.3.2. Leadout position may be changed from that shown on the plan.
Ground-adjustable leadouts are permitted.
5.3.3. Control travel, control mechanism location, and control mechanism may be changed.
5.3.4. Tip weight may be changed or may be adjustable.
5.3.5. Tail hook and its location may be changed.
5.3.6. Structural changes to strengthen the aircraft are permitted.
5.3.7. Building and finishing material substitutions are permitted.
5.3.8. Location of access hatches may be changed.
5.3.9. Engine mountings may be changed, and engines of different displacement may be
used."

Interestingly, my design of a scale F6F Hellcat gets zero Historical Bonus Points -- while a Goldberg Shoestring gets 100 H.B. Points.
By the way, I'm a big fan of Nostalgia Carrier.

Just so !!!

Any old model is eligible, whether designed for Carrier or not.

In the olden days and even now, a Ringmaster or Flite Streak, or my case a Super Clown, could have been entered in Profile Carrier.
Of course in US Navy Carrier, Class I or Class II it would still need to be scale to get scale points.

Airplanes such as Hellcats, Corsairs and Skyraiders have been modeled in almost every size from 30" to 44" wingspan.  I think if you dig deep enough you could find evidence of a Hellcat that would legalize your model.

I am an old carrier flyer and I have many of the J Roberts Maulers, Corsairs, Sterling Guardians, J Roberts Profile Kits plus 7 Supertigre G-65 Rear Rotor engines either stock or modified for class 2 with exhaust baffles and Kavan big bore pressure carburetors , 6 OPS 60 and 65's rear rotor engines, PM me for inventory if interested.  All are negotiable. My health has told me it's time to pass these treasures along before my wife has an estate sale.  I also have about 50 old RC kits and boxes of engines but that's another story.
Thanks, Jim
