Fiberglass vail - easier than carbon vail?
« on: July 12, 2016, 04:32:44 PM »
Guys,
Anyone try fiberglass vail in place of carbon vail? I see it is available at considerably less then carbon vail. I believe it is 0.3 vs 0.2 for the carbon. Just wondering if it goes on easier around curves?

Dennis I tried it once and did not think it worked as well as CF veil as far as filling it with dope and talcum to smooth the surface for painting.  Just my experience but others may weigh in.

I tried carbon veil several  times and decided it wasn't worth the money.  Fibre glas goes around compound curves much easier.  Yes it does take a little more filler.

I agree that fiberglas conforms great to compound curves, but I think the querie was about veil

I did too Serge.  I have used Fiberglass VEIL and Carbon Fiber VEIL both and I liked the way the Carbon Fiber VEIL filled and sanded smooth much better than the fiberglass VEIL.  Fiberglass cloth is a whole other product.

I have used fiberglass veil and don't like it as a filler.  Much more coarse weave and heaver in the final finish.

Are you all talking about the same thing?

There is fibeglass cloth which looks like this:

and then there is veil, or tissue which looks like this:

I've found that the tissue is a dog to fill, and ends up heavy and weak, the cloth fills better and makes for a more complete structure.
