Acceptable Clearance?
« on: March 16, 2017, 05:13:37 PM »
Would something like this be acceptable to do to the flaps for clearance of the pushrod to the elevators?

Looks like some of mine.  The nuts will be hard to reach, but other than that it looks fine.

As long as it moves freely and does the job, it's got enough clearance.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Won't hurt a thing.  Like the man said, as long it clears it will work.  Worse yet is when it rubs and makes things sticky, no good.

You're worried about the rod and link hitting the flap at full throw, right? It should be fine, but if you think it needs more clearance, it won't have to be enough to ugly it up. What plane is this?

Sound advice! Thanks!

Hi Rusty,  it was hitting it so I cut clearance in the flap and copied the cut to the other flap. I just thought it looked goofy. I bought a Tanager from a fellow modeler last winter. Then at Brodak's last year someone was selling a Tanager for a heck of a price and I couldn't pass it up. So I started building the second Tanager. My back up just in case ;D

Wile I'm at it I should ask if this one is ok before I get some good weather to paint it. Will this notch cause some trimming problems since the other side has more flap area now?

I have notched flaps like that for years.  In fact I have even cut the flaps to look even and put a peice of scrap between the flap and fuselage on both sides.

My Twister outboard flap is notched just like that. I doubt if that notch affects anything that flyers at our level can detect.

Thanks for the reply Doc! I hope you're feeling better!
