Strega Maiden Flight
« on: June 30, 2016, 10:28:10 AM »
I maidened the Strega yesterday. Short flights as I am still breaking in the engine.
My first time feeling a big plane and engine.
Need some trimming to get rid of higher outboard wing. Working on some solutions to that today. Flap tweak etc.
Going to try the Enya .61 next with the stock muffler as I had on the tongue muffler.
Nice to come home with it in one piece!

Looks like a winner to me.  Guess Ty hasn't been to Wally World lately.   Besides don't you want to stand out in the crowd, especially when you are on stage?

Oh, I love seersucker.
In May, I strategically wore my favorite pink seersucker shirt so's I wouldn't intimidate Mike Londke too much Lol. I was going up against him, for the Int title. He's venturing over to stunt lately from Combat, and we'd had some friendly smack going on all winter.

He Pasted me anyway. LL~ Hate to think how bad it coulda' been if I'd worn my baby blue seersucker.

Downright scary!

I sure wish I could fly a big ol' plane like that, but I learned my limits with the Magnum which is a similar size. In a moderate wind, it would walk me off my spot on pullouts, and I did more than one touch and go at the bottom of an hourglass. It was old and heavy, at 72 ounces, and just too much pull for my skinny frame to handle. But on days when I could manage it, it was a really graceful stunt ship, something I think I could have flown better than the mid-size planes I compete with. 55 ounces is about it for me. I'm looking forward to seeing some good flight reports from you with this one. I hope you'll be bringing it down South this Fall.

Though I know it was painful to see the Magnum splinter....the photo is awesome.
Flew the Strega today. Still trimming and breaking in the engine. Got the wings level. Now to get the prop and such right. Not done the whole pattern yet. Being patient for once.
I may be coming in the Fall to the Carolina Criterium. I have a gig in Shelby the week after the contest for Scouts so may come early. Have to see how I can get it all in the mini-van.

It was the most frustrating crash in my CL career. It was a very old plane that was built by the late Mike Garmon of the Norfolk Aeromodelers, presented to me by John Tate and Howard Shenton while I was receiving my first place Beginner trophy in May 2014. I held it with the self-imposed spirit that I would fly it for fun occasionally and gradually clean it up, which I did, and at some later time, pass it on in a similar way to an aspiring Beginner. I was horribly disappointed in my judgement to roll the lines back out after having called it a day, and needlessly slamming it to pieces. It's worse than the picture betrays. I was kicking myself for a long time after that, and still cannot shake it off. I never have that emotional problem with any other crashes. I took the photo in hopes that one day a little humor would ease the memory of my stupid judgement... like sharing it now.

Rusty I recently had a "world class" crash at Brodak's while practicing with my 59 Ares. I put it straight in at the bottom of a square outside loop.My lines went slack (wind?,windup?) and I lawn darted it. The ground was soft and she stood perpendicular nose buried about 6 inches deep . I didn't get a picture of it,but I'm certain someone out there did. Maybe a pic will appear somewhere. Shame to crash a good ship ,yours or mine, but we both know it's part of the deal.....PhillySkip

Hi Shrug,

I can see you also have a TF Score and I was wondering how the Strega and Score compare.  I own a couple Score's and I also own a Strega ARF which I plan on assembling soon.  I am hoping that the Strega will out perform the Score. What is your impression so far?  I weighed the Strega parts with and engine and tank and all the hardware and it weighed around 62 oz which is much lighter then my assembled Score.

Yep, we do, Skip. I hated telling Howard and John I'd done it, and they both reacted the same... "Ah well, you had fun with it, didn't ya?!" And they were on to other things without a second thought. I felt better after that. It was just harder because I treated it as if it was borrowed and had another new pilot someday down the road. Hell, for all I know that old thing could've broken before it hit the ground... yeah, that's it Lol.

Hey Charles....I have not gotten to fly the Score yet. Still assembling. It is kinda just loosely assembled in the photo. My Strega is 73 oz with everything. Still getting a feel for it and trimming it out. Not done a full pattern with it yet.
More to come.
