Wittow Weddow Williams Wacerw
« on: November 26, 2016, 02:27:13 PM »
Hi all, I've been out of circulation since summer 2015 with 3 ruptured disks in my lower back. The "Sawbones" finally got me up an moving again. While I was laid up I had plenty of time to sit at the computer and get some new planes deigned up. One of my projects was back engineering Dalton Hammett's 60" WEDELL-WILLIAMS stunter. He's doing this new one as a 52 incher. The more I monkeyed with the drawing the more I thought it would make a really nice 1/2A.
Now about the topic "subject" name...While I was at the 'puter my 6 yr old granddaughter (who has a bit of a speech impediment) asked me what I was doing. I said I'm making a LITTLE...WEDDELL...WILLIAMS...RACER. She went running down the hall exclaiming Granma, Granma! Grampa's making a Wittow Weddow Williams Wacerw!!!! OK, go ahead! Just try to say Little Wedell Williams Racer 3 times...Betcha ya can't do it either!

On to the plane. The first pic is of Dalton's WWR. That's where it all started.

The next handful of pix are getting some sub assemblies done, and getting the wing started. You'll notice it looks like I'm working on different wings. Actually I scrapped out 3 different designs before I settled on one that was easy enough to build and had strong LG mounts for my style of flying. When I fly, you'll see earth worms putting on hard hats ;D

Mounting up the bell crank and lead outs.
One of the hinge flaps acts as a reinforcement for the elev joiner.
Gluing up the landing gear half rib mounts with epoxy.

The motor mount is key slotted into the fuselage and reinforced with more of the polyester hinge material.
The 4 holes in the fuselage side are for "stitching" the fuel tank in place.

I didn't get any pix of installing the wing and tailfeathers...that's pretty straight forward.
AFTER the wing is installed, the landing gear half rib assemblies are pivoted into place and glued in using carpenters glue for penetration and strength.

Finally the wheel pants are slid over the axle and stitch and glued in place.
Now a ton of sanding and finishing.
I forgot to mention this particular one is deigned for the tank-less COX production motors. I will be using a Brodak 2/3oz tank on it.

I still have to spray finish on the landing gear/ wheel pants, setup the push rod and my lead-out ends.

A couple more pix.
If anyone is interested I will be kitting these starting about December 10th this year. Besides the "COX Production" mount I'll also have them available in a beam mount.
I still am working on a way to mount the COX Black Widow and Golden Bee motors with the stunt tanks and still keep that distinct big cowl look to it.

Thanks for looking!

Guys, all the parts are CNC cut. I hold a tolerance of +/- .001
My flying is bad enough. I don't need a crooked plane helping me! ;D
If I get a decent day up here in the north I'll try to get some video of it before I wreck it LL~

Wow, that's some serious overkill, looks really nice though. Please make sure you let us know when the kits are available.  y1

A lot of thought went into that design I see.  I too would like to know when the kit is ready as I have one of those engines needing a plane to pull through the air.   Yours looks great. H^^

YEA! Finally got my act together. The WEDELL-WILLIAMS 1/2As are ready to go.
It's in the vendors corner in the SOUTHRIDGE CNC listing.

As soon as I get the 40 incher released I'll try my hand at a 1/2A Gee Bee stunter. Anyone interested?!

Thank you all for the encouraging comments

I have to apologize to everyone who purchased a beam mount kit. In my haste to get the kits shipped, I forgot to include the addendum instructions for installing the beam mounts and the type of reinforcement used. I found them in my office. I'm posting them here and in the vendors corner. If you can't download and print them let me know and I'll mail them out to you.

Again, my apologies,
Greg

Well I was going to put the kit under the tree until Christmas morning, but I couldn't wait.  I read the instructions as say to do for a change.  My instructions had the beam mount page as the last page.  The plans look great also as well as all the wood pieces.  Now I have a question,  since I now have the plans and instructions,  is there a possibility of getting a kit of just the laser cut wood parts?   Any way thanks for a great looking kit. H^^

NO you may not get another lazer cut kit LL~...but I will gladly cut you another one on my CNC spindle machine ;D
...but here is a catch. You have to post pics of the finished planes. Remember, Santa is watching.
The kit without the plans and instructions is $40 + $5 shaking and manhandling.

Beam mount or production mount?

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
