Norvel 061 or norvel 074
« on: January 06, 2016, 02:43:51 PM »
Which engine would be the best for my Baby Miss Behave posted here and in the old time section. I am ready to cover and finish so I was thinking maybe the Big Mig 074 is too much for this 90 sq. inch airplane. Not experienced with these small engines in C/L. These are the RC versions so I planned on fixing the throttle in high position. I have lines of 42FTx 08 dia. 50 ft.x 12 dia and 58ft x 12 dia. available for larger airplanes. This airplane was originally powered by the early O&R 19and 23 engines on ignition. Richard

Hi Richard,

To be honest, I am not sure that even the .074 will be enough.  Even though the wing area is only 90 sq.in., the building techniques and structure are not of "1/2A" origin.  Bigger and heavier components!  Just because it IS only 90 squares, I would have to go with at least a modern .10 and probably a modern .15 like a FP or LA.  The prop used will allow you to achieve a decent flying speed.  And the structure will easily stand a modern .15.

Wow, I was concerned the .074 would be too much. Shows how out of touch I am with 1/2A U/C flying. ( I guess the .074 size is  considered class A) If I were to go with the 074 what line length and dia. would be best?  I do have a Fox 15 I could use. Richard

With tank, but no engine, what do you expect the weight to be? Also, what kind of performance are you trying to achieve? It ain't a gonna ever win the Walker Cup!  LL~
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!

I would think the .074 would be more than adequate. Don't underestimate what a TeeDee .049 is capable of either.

Walker Cup, LOL! Al I'm trying to do is just fly it around and around and around, stop! getting dizzy  just talking about it. Seriously I'm just trying to see  what it was like to fly as a 12 year old back when the  Baby Miss Behave was a Christmas present that never saw the sky.

I don't know anything about the baby "miss behave", however as a general reference I'm currently building some "ringmaster 207" 1/2A planes. It's 207 square inches and uses a .049 - .061 engine. It's a modern plane designed by Pat Johnston. It's a very competitive plane powered with a TeeDee.

So i would think your .074 would be a bit much. Hope this helps with a reference

OK, I have some weights to ponder. The airplane less finish, engine, lead outs and fuel tank is 3.95 oz. the .074 big Mig Norvel is 2.95 oz  without prop. I plan on a modest finish either using silkspan or polyspan with a dope finish. Min. of 2 coats nitrate on bare wood, 1-2 coats dope and talc filler, covering with 3 coats nitrate with min of 2-3 coats BR color dope. I think I will go with the Norvel 074 to start with, I can always up the power to a Fox 15 if needed.  Richard.

Sounds like after your finish you'll be in the 5 to maybe 6 oz in the plane with no engine installed. The planes I'm building now will be 10-13 oz all up weight. The baby miss behave looks to be a sport or stunt plane. I would think the 074 would be more than sufficient.

Dane,
I have a RM 207 w/ Norvel .061, it hauls on 48' x .008 lines!! weight = 7.5 oz. w/o fuel, when time permits I'll put a Norvel .049 on it for comparison.
Still have not used the LAS46.

Richard, in my opinion the question should be what SHOULD pull it around, not what will pull it.

That 1947 structure was not made for stunt. Most barely went round and round. I would suggest the Fox because it will pull a bigger prop slower. Be careful though, Foxes don't like a very large prop. I would suggest an 8x4.

NORVEL engines are excellent, but you must spin them up to get on their power curve. That type plane looks mismatched with a fast engine.

Were I going to build one I would probably power it with an .09 diesel.

George, I know and agree with your statement regarding the 074 vs Fox 15. I already drilled the mount for the 074, so will try that first then if need be will adapt the Fox 15. I have a set of 50 ft lines from the sixties but thinking with the 074 they might be to big in dia. I guess they are 012 std lines. I have a set of 42ft 08 lines but might be too short to be comfortable. I have no experience flying U/C with small engines. Flew mostly 19-35 engines in the sixties until the RC bug bit me. Then took time away from model airplanes to build a Homebuilt Starduster One. No longer fly full scale, so back to models. Richard

90 square inches under 5 ounces finished without engine?  I would consider a hot Cox reed .049 or a TD.

A Cox reedy will pull a 6 ounce slab around with authority.  Something actually streamlined and shaped would be no problem.

Now with the bigger engine you could run longer lines which may be helpful since 35ft lines are not exactly site friendly at most places, simply because the circles are built bigger and the grass in the middle tends to be longish.

I agree with Phil if those weights are right. My 8 oz Baby Streak is a rocket with a good running TD .049 and a 5.25x3 prop, maybe too fast for a less than fine tuned 1/2A pilot. I fly on 40' and 45' lines depending on the wind.

1/2A is really the .049 class.
Sometimes 1/2A is stretched to .061.
I have never seen 1/2A stretched to .074, but anything is possible.

I fly a Flying Clown (15 to 29 size) with 200 square inches with a TeeDee .049.

Very nice tapered leading and trailing edges. Do I see thin ribs with capstrips? Tell us more!

What does it weigh?

Is this the Flying Clown I saw at Brodaks years ago?
If so, it is impressive, flies GREAT!   AP^
