How far can I push it
« on: October 17, 2014, 01:30:14 PM »
stole a design and made it out of coroplast.
Now we see if I can stunt a WenMac .049 for points.

Balloon tank, 30 inch wingspan, 7.6 ounces, BearCat ripoff.
I give you the CoroKitty.

I will paint it if it flies.

The Bob Baron Barecat is one of the best flying 1/2A stunt ships ever.

you are so right.
I will put this up against the big boys on a good day.
Providing the wind isn't too bad.
at 13 ounces and an .049 the wind could quickly become your enemy.
This one now runs electric and although it is heavier is still flies very well.

I do not expect that the plastic one will fly 1-10th as well but it should still be fun and if the WenMac proves to not be up to it I will try a killer bee.

I saw the original Barecat fly at the '80 Nats.  It was spectacular.  I flew 1/2A stunt and had to leave before the second round was finished.  When I left I was in fifth place.  Does anyone have a record of the outcome of that event?

I'm thinkin' that it might fly better than you think! Didn't Wild Bill publish something like this in Flying Models a few years before he passed> It wasn't called BareCat. There were three sizes for different small engines. Part of his Doodlebug series? Some one help me out!!
And go check out the video of my AWSOME Cox Stuka flight today over on the main forum!

Wild Bill's Doodle Bug, a regular profile no flaps & had the same unusual rudder & sub-rudder.   Plans 40, 25, & 1/2a from FM.

well I flew it last Sunday.
It tracks nice has good line tension and plenty of control but this particular wenmac was just not quite as strong as I would like (couldn't pull it through the high stuff) so an engine swap is coming up.
Hope the weather stays decent for one more weekend.

Bill,
I like my BareCat. See Picture Gallery, District 5, one row up from bottom. Norvel .061 , Bladder config. Flies great on 48' lines. Will be trying shorter lines for windy days.
Would be interested in more info re your electric conversion (ie motor, battery type and location, cg location, all up weight, lap times, line length etc). I just might have to build one w/electric.  y1

Thanks,

My conversion was done so I could put it back if I didn't like the electric setup.
the whole package was bought off of ebay piece meal and not a matched setup.
It works but the battery is a little heavy and the motor is not good quality, so I will not recommend any of it.
that said it does fly pretty good and I will get some better gear.
note the tube built into the fuselage for the bladder adds strength and if left out the nose may break off in tight maneuvers if the motor is a little heavy.

Howard Yamagata's Norvel .061 bladder tank and APC 4.5 prop launch RPM is 26K
The red one is mine trying to get more RPM's to fly HB~>

Larry,
Thanks for the pics. You answered one of my questions re battery location. I was planning on locating on the cg! :-)

I can launch my Norvel .061 powered B'Cat at 23,500 and it tachs over 26000 in the air. We have a tach to measure same airborne. I use an APC 6x2. will use a custom made CF prop at a later date after I convince Bob Whitney I need one. y1

Mine is running a 6-6prop at 18000 and it goes OK, but its a low quality motor and growls a lot in the turns. won't last long.
the battery is rubber banded to the bottom at CG.
As I said it's to big a battery but it will almost do two patterns.

Roger, What fuel, plug, and head clearance are you using ?

FUEL:  Wildcat.  It is 15% N (see no need for more), 18 % oil(80% Castor, 20% Synthetic).
Nelson Plug in a Galbreath head, two Norvel head shims. over 300 flights on one of them, still running strong.

Howard,
What plane are you flying it (Norvel) on?
Weight is a factor.
"IF" I recall, (tooooo lazy to go out to the shop to weigh it), my Pathfinder weighs 11 oz., dry.

Roger, it's a Yuvenko Barracuda that I bought from Cleveland a while ago and I've modified to test Barons concept. It weighs 14 7/8 oz with 1once nose weight. I, have a Barecat already to cover. So I thought I'd work most of the bugs on the test model. I've flown it with a .08 Picco and that engine work very well. The plane flies very good and will do the entire pattern.
